Custom Store or a Hosted Platform (Salla / Zid / Shopify)? An Honest Comparison

We get this every week: "I want an online store — should I open on Salla or Zid, or build a custom store?" The honest answer is that it is not a question of which is better, but which fits the stage you are at.
Here is the comparison exactly as we explain it to clients, with no bias.
What is the actual difference?
Hosted platforms (Salla, Zid, Shopify) rent you a store that is already built. You pick a theme, upload products, and start selling. The platform handles hosting, security, updates, payments and shipping.
A custom store is built for you from scratch. You own the code and the data outright, you control every detail, and you pay once instead of subscribing monthly.
The real cost, in numbers
Hosted platforms start cheap and accumulate. At the time of writing, Salla offers a free plan, then Plus at 990 SAR per year and Pro at 2,990 SAR per year. Zid offers a free lifetime plan, then Launch at 990 SAR per year and Growth at 299 SAR per month.
But the subscription is not the whole cost. Add:
• Payment gateway fees: roughly 1.5%–2.5% per card transaction, and higher with buy-now-pay-later services.
• Paid apps: many functions you would assume are core arrive as an app at 30 to 300 SAR per month, each.
• SMS and WhatsApp messaging: billed by usage.
The practical result: a serious store on a hosted platform usually costs between 2,000 and 6,000 SAR per year — every year, indefinitely.
A custom store is the mirror image: a higher one-time build cost, then domain and hosting annually (a few hundred SAR), and maintenance only when you need it.
The break-even point usually falls between year two and year three. Before it, the platform is cheaper. After it, custom is cheaper.
When a hosted platform is the right call
• You are starting out and have not yet proven the product sells. Do not invest in a custom build for an untested idea.
• You sell standard products in a standard way: size, colour, quantity, cart, checkout.
• You want to launch in days, not weeks.
• Nobody on your side handles technical work, and you want someone else carrying security and updates.
• You depend on ready-made local integrations: Saudi payments, shipping and invoicing that work from day one.
When a custom store earns its cost
• Your selling model is not standard: appointment booking, spec-based pricing, subscriptions, rentals, auctions, configurable products.
• You need to connect to a system you already run: inventory, accounting, ERP, or an internal app.
• You have genuinely outgrown the platform and are stacking paid apps to get what you want.
• The user experience is part of your brand and you do not want a store that looks like every other store.
• You want full ownership of code and data, or you are raising funding and an investor asks what you actually own.
The part everyone avoids saying
A hosted platform rents to you. As long as you pay, your store runs. Stop paying and it stops. And if the platform changes its terms or pricing, or removes a feature you depend on, you have no say.
On the other side, a badly built custom store is worse than any platform: undocumented code, a developer who disappeared, and a store nobody knows how to fix. Custom is only worth it if it is built properly and handed to you with the full code and documentation.
Our straight recommendation
If you are starting now: open on Salla or Zid. Test the market, learn what sells, get your first customers. Do not pay for a custom build before you know you are actually selling.
If you have been selling for a year or more, and the platform feels like a ceiling, or you are paying for subscriptions and apps and still not getting what you want — then moving to a custom store is an investment rather than a gamble.
