Online Store or Instagram Account? The Answer Nobody Tells You
"I sell on Instagram and WhatsApp — why would I need an online store?" A fair question, and the answer isn't "delete your accounts." It's "understand the difference."
What social media does well
Discovery. People find your product on Instagram and TikTok better than anywhere else. That's real power — keep using it.
What nobody tells you
1. You don't own your audience. The algorithm changes, your reach drops by half overnight, and there's nothing you can do. Accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers have been closed by mistake and never recovered.
2. Ordering by DM doesn't scale. Ten WhatsApp orders a day is manageable. A hundred? You'll need staff just to reply, orders will slip through, and hesitant buyers will purchase from an easier competitor.
3. Trust. A customer paying by card in an organized store trusts you more than one being told "transfer to this account." Bigger amounts need bigger trust.
4. No data. Who visited? What did they look at? Where did they hesitate and leave? In your own store you know all of this and build decisions on it. On social media you're blind.
The right formula
Social media for discovery, your own store for selling. The post attracts; the link in bio takes the customer to a store where they order by themselves at any time — while you sleep.
Where to start?
You don't need to start big. A tidy store with your core products, a payment gateway, and a shipping method is more than enough to launch, then it grows with you. This is exactly the kind of project we build at Phillote — tell us what you sell and we'll suggest the right setup.
